I need to announce a new one tomorrow. I don't want to do a direct posting contest, as that tends to result in a lot of spam and the person with the most serious internet addiction winning. Still, something that brings activity to the forum would be good. Anyone have any good ideas?

Have a contest to come up with the best contest idea. Use the winner's idea the next week, then all the losing ideas in weeks after that until you come up with something better. If you can't come up with something better, have another contest idea contest. Problem solved.
(There's a reason I never started a forum of my own.)

I thought about a referral contest, but it would just bring a lot of non-posting members I think, though I might do something like that for usergroup contests (if I create usergroups and have contests for them) that incorporates post counts of members.

Anyone?

My old forum had a referral contest, and so that no non-posting members came in, it went like this:

When you refer somebody, they need to post. If they post 5 times, you get 1 point. If they post 10 times, you get 2 points. 20 posts, 4 points. Etc. Etc.

It works really well :)

That'd be good for the (future possible) group contests, but I'm not sure we have enough users right now who could recruit to make it work. And you might just get spam.
