A survey of 1,700 troops in Iraq has found that less than half think Iraqi civilians should be treated with dignity and respect. Over a third thought torture was acceptable if it helped save a soldier's life or find information about the insurgents, and about a tenth said they had physically mistreated Iraqi civilians or unnecessarily damaged their property. The survey found that this was, unsurprisingly, related to the stress and long/repeated tours.
This is rather disturbing, IMO, we're supposed to be winning hearts and minds but less than half of the troops over there think civilians should be treated with dignity? |
