This came up on a forum I read sometimes, so I'm starting a thread on it. Do you think they should be required?

Although I would like to say no because I would hate to where a uniform, it could solve many problems that schools face quite easily. So, as long as uniforms are not horrible looking I have no problem with it.

Gangs, constant disregard of authority, end of bending the rules, stealing. As well as a few I'm probably not thinking of right now.

Shirt, tie, belt, dockers, dress shoes.

What I had* to wear during the winter.

Now, as I can wear the polo and seniors can wear it year-round, I never have to put on the full uniform to class again.

How?

People can steal and bend rules just as well in a uniform as they can in something other than a uniform.

Reduces in-school gang violence and promotion of the actual gang.

Overlarge jackets, pants, and other articles of clothing make it very easy for stealing to take place. When I say bending the rules I mean by taking advantage of the dress code by wearing inappropriate clothing, this would not be a problem if everyone wore the same uniform.

Then again you may not see the benefits of this because you do not go to my school.

Maybe, I don't know, the gangs in my school come from the middle schools, so maybe if you got out of that promotion it would stop it then. I'm not sure it'd really make a difference though, I don't entirely understand why people join gangs in the first place so I couldn't say the best way to stop them.

Everyone's wearing a backpack, so I doubt that would make much of a difference.

You don't need a uniform to prevent that, just a basic dress code.

Your school being special because...?

We have one, its taken advantage of, often.

Special really isn't the word I would use. My school consists of fake gangsters who believe they run the world, furthermore they disrespect everyone, and steal from the lunch rooms(where backpacks are not allowed).

In other words my school is in a dire need of severe discipline or school uniforms and I dont see the former coming anytime soon.

I see nothing wrong with enforcing a basic, decent, dress code. For anecdotal evidences: My mother went to a catholic school when she was younger, had to wear the uniforms and the whole nine yards. There were just as many fights are her school than at the public school she went to.

Also, my friends who went to Catholic school seemed to have more fights than my own school. A public school.

You have to not only consider a uniform, but the people actually wearing it. While it may lower overall violence, and discrimination based on wealth, it's not likely to make that big of an impact.

Sure there's also some studies, somewhere, that indicate that kids in uniforms do better on their tests or something, but I really doubt that because little Johnny and little Dwayne aren't wearing whatever-is-in-fashion that their test scores went up.

So, overall, I don't see a reason for it. Just have a decent dress code and emphasize that. Besides, high school where kids are supposed to be figuring out who they are, going through identity crises. They don't need to all be conformed into something like that. Besides, uniforms make you get detention for things like "illegal pants".

It's just not vague enough then. Our district prohibits things like "disruptive hairstyles," any hairstyle can therefore be prohibited.

Can't people just watch their stuff then? Do you actually have gang violence, or are they just wannabes?

Our principal went through this phase last november when she made us tuck in our shirts so our waistbands were visible, it lasted maybe a week, it didn't do anything useful at all. It didn't reduce the number of fights, even though it was the same week they started searching every bag at the door, it didn't make people more respectful, nothing. I don't think a uniform would be any different.
