Gun Rights and Gun Control.

What rights should a person possess with a firearm? Is gun control to lax or to strict? Thoughts on weapons in general?

I own (not really because I'm 18, but it's "mine") a Ruger 9mm. Guns, with the right cautions taken, are not dangerous. Guns don't kill people just like cars don't kill people: people kill people using tools improperly or recklessly. Quote: Is gun control to lax or to strict? I don't think they need changing, at least. Plenty of precautions are taken when registering guns. You can't even buy a gun in a day - you have to wait three days to pick it up in case you were had one of those heat of the moment desires to kill.

Besides, making guns harder to get for the regular gun buyer (whether it be a collector, shooter for fun like myself, or military/police person) would have little to no impact on the people who need to be controlled - those who use guns maliciously. They don't go by the rules to get their weapons, so why make more rules to stop them? Gun control to stop the typical criminal makes no sense.

When I turned 21 I plan on obtaining a concealed carry permit.

For the first time, maybe ever, I agree with Houndstooth on the majority of what he says.

While guns need to be controlled, even for the legal buyer, making the the regulations more strict is not going to do anything but irritate the law-abiding citizens of the area. A criminal obviously doesn't care about laws, that's what he's a criminal.

Background checks are a must. If you've committed a violent offense, I don't want you owning a gun.

For the record, I used to own a .22 caliber rifle, until I sold it because I decided I didn't want a gun anymore. Now I'm a big hippy.

I like the laws which are inplace now. yeah there are some weird ones but for the most part we are safe. banning guns isn't going to stop things like the VT shooting. I think if you want those things to stop you need to go the other way, and loosen some restrictions. A lot of gun makers are making guns with ID chips in there which have a sensor that reads finger prints, and if anyone tries to fire the gun who isn't authorized the gun jams. and since most criminals dont use legal guns anyway, there isn't much of a worry about someone shooting up the place with one of these guns.

I don't think any one here suggested banning guns.

What restrictions did you have in mind?

I was talking more about restrictions on gun makers, they need to go through a lot of red tape just to produce a gun. I think if all that people work was less, than they'd save money and could pass it down to the consumer in cheaper more technilogically advanced guns.

I oppose most gun restrictions also (though, for instance, I don't want the guy next door to me to own a grenade launcher). You can put as many laws in place as you want, and they will for the most part effectively prevent law abiding citizens from owning a gun, but the criminals will still have them, so it doesn't do you any good. If they could magically take all the guns off the face of the planet and make it impossible for any others to be produced, maybe that'd be different, or maybe not, but since it can't happen that's irrelevant.
